The Mask Trading Cards in 1994

31 March 2010

One word, Smoking!

Here is a pack of Mask the Movie Trading card I got for myself 16 years ago when the movie was a hit.

I only got one pack and these are the cards that were in my pack.

The movie was a success because of the casting, story and most of all ground breaking special effect. In the movie Jim Carrey play a role of Stanley Ipkiss who was a decent guy but would label him as a Loser. Well he was a Zero.

But when he put on the Mask, it bring out his repressing nature. At the back of each card will have something written about the movie, cast and all that stuff.

The movie was a adaption of a title in Dark Horse comic and the power or should I say the curse of the Mask was to bring out the inner nature so if you are evil, this is what you will be.

The movie not only bring Jim carrey to new career height but it was the first time I get to know Cameron Diaz. I think she was 18 at that time and when she came on screen

this was what happened. It was love at first sight for many guys.

Some guys would do the same. WOOT WOOT!

I remember many famous quote in the movie and here's a recap of some of them.

I was so impressed with the movie then that I got a pack of trading card. LOL

Smoking!

For Interaction and Mobile User

29 March 2010

My dear OTTi has been online using his smart phone surfing and answering questions posted to him over at his AskOTTi column. Apparently he is having a good time and keeping him busy from bugging me too much. So if you can, please continue to ask him all sort of questions. So far there has been some funny ones by our readers here.

It has come to my attention that they are readers who surf my blog using their mobile phone when they are on the go. So to make my blog content more friendly, I have put in a Mobile View just for mobile phone readers on the top bar my header. You may Bookmark it at your mobile phone. Of course coming through the blog itself would be more colorful and fun for interaction. :P For Mobile users, more goodies will be on the way.

I love to read and reply comments but the default comment did not really allow readers to talk to each other and so I am trying out the new comment system to make interaction more fun. This is still new to me so let's me know how you feel about it okay? :)

MG Gundam W Review

I have the honor to do a review for the coming of MG Gundam W model kit which will be releasing in April.

Please take note that the model kit MG Gundam W in this review had been fully painted by air brush.

Here are the head in full colors

As the named implied, this gundam has to have wings.

And like the anime, his wing can be stretched.

With the wings, this Gundam look majestic

As this gundam possess a long rifle and it quite impossible for the hands to hold well the rifle as the model kit. So additional mechanism is added using a hook concept.

The shield had another feature such as storage for the beam sword.

The shield and the rifle play an important part in Gundam W to transformed to the flight mode.

MG Gundam W comes with the pilot, Heero Yuy

He is to scale this Gundam

There's another Heero in the cockpit which is in the chest of this Gundam.

This Gundam W can transformed into Flight mode as a plane version but I couldn't feature on this review as it may further damage the paint.

All I have to say is that this Gundam W did justice to the Anime.

This Gundam W will be out in April so look out for it.

Currently openthetoy is collecting Pre-order for just SGD $62.00. If you are interested, drop me an email with your detail. Shipping cost to oversea not included. Offer end before the end of April 2010.

Interview with Hexlord

28 March 2010

It's my pleasure to have the following interview with Hexlord (aka Usagi among some of the cosplayers), a photographer who have attended cosplay events and photoshoots in Singapore for the past few years.

1. Hexlord, When did you first started to pick up photography and how did you ended up being a cosplay photographer?

I started off taking pictures back in 2004 after knowing a few friends who are into the cosplaying hobby. I progressively started to learn photography on a more serious basis after getting my first DSLR at the end of 2007.

I became a cosplay photographer because I was interested in helping my friends when they are in costumes. Because I have been attending cosplay events for quite a while now, taking photographs became second nature to me.

2. Who was the first subject that you take for cosplay?

For a private photoshoot, it would be Inuran Inuran who was cosplaying as Rosette from the series Chrono Crusade.

3. You have been covering much cosplaying event overseas right? Which are the countries and what motivate you to go through such length?

So far I have only been to the events in my home country (Malaysia), although I will be going to the Philipines and maybe Australia this year.

I guess I am motivated because there are cosplayers from all over the world, and I love to make new friends.Combined with my love for traveling, why not?

4. Taken from your description in The Banzai! Effect about you
"... this gentleman have seen everything from ninjas to robots within the local cosplay community as a photographer/cosplayer... "
It suggested to me that you have cosplayed before. What character you cosplay before? Got any picture to share? :P

Yes, I cosplayed before but that was in ages past so I rather not share anything. :P

5. How do you normally conduct a photoshoot for cosplayers?

Usually I will ask the cosplayers if they are interested in a photoshoot, and do the necessary logistical/storyboard planning with them. I would also do some research into the particular series (and get hooked to them as well).

Of course there are also shoots where the cosplayers do the whole planning so I just meet up with them at the arranged time and location, and begin shooting almost immediately.

6. What is the biggest challenge you face when you are taking cosplayers?
The biggest challenge is probably getting the poses and expression right, as well as ensuring that the lighting and exposure suit the feel of the series.

7. Are there any favorite cosplayers you often work with?

I do enjoy working with all the cosplayers I know, and I have way too many favourites to mention. :P

I would be happy to work with any of the cosplayers as long as I have the time to do so. I believe that everyone deserves at least a few good photos of themselves while cosplaying.

8. As photography maybe misused by third party. Is copyrights ever a issue in your years of photography? How did you deal with this??

Well, so far there were some cases of misuse but I consider them to be minor issues as the watermarks are still intact and that the users apologized to me for their mistakes.

Of course, over time there might be incidents where greater cases of misuse might happen, so I hope to be better prepared in such situations.

9. You have created a Cosplay 100 from the list of archive photographs you taken through the years. Among the 100, which is your most favorite or most memorial shots?

My favorites shots will be the following
1. The Shana shoots where we went to pretty epic locations.

2. The Gundam 00 shoot which took me to the heart of Malaysia's Putrajaya

3. The Soul Calibur IV shoot which was my first time working with Indonesia's Endiru cosplay group.

4. The Macross 7 shoot, a collaboration between Malaysian and Singapore cosplayers.

5. The Blood+ shoots, all of which took place in the same year (2007).

6. Any of the shoots involving the "Final Frontier", a vast area located in the western part of Singapore. Some parts of that place are truly breathless.

10. You doesn't seems to take much on Toys. Is there a reason why toys doesn't interest you?

Most of my toys are in Malaysia, and there wasn't really much room to store toys or figurines in my Singapore home. That being said, I do not mind taking photos of my friends' toys if I am able to.

11. So what is your plan and direction you are going in 2 years time?
I hope to work with more cosplayers both local and overseas, as well as to continue promoting cosplay photography as a viable and respectful genre of photography. And of course, to do better in photography on a personal level.

12. Since you have quite a pool of good photographs under your portfolio, did it crossed your mind to come out a book? If yes when will it be?

I actually have a plan a while back to produce a book featuring my works. However due to my current busy work/study schedule, I have to put it on hold for the time being. Of course, I don't mind a helping hand here and there if there are people who are willing to assist me. :P

13. Will you be considering to have a studio and to embark on photography as a full-time career some day?

I am a bit half-hearted on this because doing it as a full-time career can be a double-edged sword. You can be either at the top of the game, or be stuck in a rut due to the demanding clientele. Having said that, I don't mind having a studio to work on some of my future conceptual plans.

14. Last question for you. I heard that you have been invited to a Philippines cosplay event as a judge. Wow! How did the invitation comes about?
I was told that the organizers of the event like my shots, so they sent me an invitation letter. It was a pleasant surprise to be honest, haha.

Well we certainly hope to see more of your cosplay photography from the Philippines when you return. Thank you for having this interview with us.

NECA T-800 Review

27 March 2010

I always wanted a T-800 exoskeleton ever since I saw the Terminator movie way back in the 1980s. After almost two decades, I got myself one by NECA thanks to Phantomzone

The package was simple and at the back of the card was some written profile of T-800

I opened the toy and I was glad the figure can stand quite well on it's own.

A closed up on T-800's head which has lot of fine details. The eyes were fierce looking but somehow I felt he has an evil grin...maybe it was just me.

I love the amount of detail at the side of the head. I remember in T2 how John operated on his head to reprogram it from Read only mode to Read and Write mode. I wonder if I can find the switch to open the skull to reprogram T-800 as in T2 too. LOL

From the back, the figure stay true to the metal skeleton structure leaving room for cybernetic organism which would be Arnold's massive muscles in his prime.

As for accessories, NECA throw in a extra hand and a rifle which was suppose to be futuristic but I was not impressed for the design was poor in my opinion.

Now for the articulation, this figure only offer very basic articulation regardless of the amount of joints. The upper body articulation can do pose like this.

It can hold the weapon well which meet the basic requirement.

Nevertheless, some of the joints were very much restricted. That is the max it can go for bending of the arms.

The major weakness is that the lower part of the body like the legs can never do much pose due to the design. I tried and I broke a small part of the leg. Nothing a super glue can't fixed. Poor quality.

Now I did a comparison to my macfarlane's T-800 Arnold for size and for size, NECA T-800 exoskeleton seems to be taller.

End of the day, NECA T-800 exoskeleton is good as a display figure more than a action figure. So I will put them standing side by side together for display.

Something that strike me was in the movie and even the TV series, T-800 in exoskeleton mode never speak a word on screen. I think it would look rather stupid too if he speak in exoskeleton mode as they will be only be visible movement of the jaw. Picture T-800 saying his famous line...

Pretty weird right?

Woody & Buzz Lightyear by Kaiyodo

I always wanted Woody and Buzz lightyear but never have I got any of them. After I saw the news of them coming out in 1st of August inline with the Toy Story 3 screening.

I think I got to have these guys from Kaiyodo as they are to scale with each other.

Meet Woody or should I say Tom Hanks?

He comes with another face and 2 pairs of hands. Yes one of the hand look like Buzz no doubt. Why? I have no clue either. Maybe it has to do with Toy story 3? By the way, I love the cute binoculars.

For Buzz is a little shorter but that how I remember him in Toy story.

He comes with his wings, addition head and 3 Little Plastic Men I mean toy soilders. :P

There's always two group of fans between Woody and Buzz and I wonder who you love most? Woody or Buzz?

Anyway I can't wait for August! To infinity and beyond!
