SD Mask Rider / Kamen Rider Trading Card

30 April 2009

Here are a handful Kamen Rider trading cards I collected more than a decade ago. The cards were labeled in 1991. So that will be 18 years ago!

They were from a anime which Kamen Rider were drawn as cute heroes. I have never seen the anime tho. I just use some pocket money out of curiosity. Each of them cost about $0.20 SGD when I got them.

First off, it is Kamen Rider (aka Mask Rider) V3! The front was in portrait layout with some power level on both side. While at the back of the card written was a short bio of V3 in landscape layout. By the way, V3 is a Team Leader. Power level 6200!

Next another Kamen Rider Sky Rider! Although Sky Rider only have 3500 power level, he is the only Rider that can fly.

For the Villain, we have Jak Shougun, a military leader of the empire wearing a gold face mask which kind of remind me of the villain in G.I Joes. Although in SD mode, he doesn't look cute at all. Than again he is a Villain and his power level is on par with V3.

How can Kamen Rider be a rider without a bike? Here's one for V3! Meet v3's hurricane. Power level only 4200 but the defensive power gave it an edge above the rest.

Lastly the face off time. Black RX facing off with Shadow Moon. Power level 6800! More to attack than defense.

Looking at the back of the card above, let me think how many kamen rider I'm missing out in this series. I didn't collected the whole series as I had limited allowance during my school days. I sure would love to see the complete set. Anyone seen or collected these?

For more of the anime information can be found here. I wonder anyone have watched the anime before. Local channel in Singapore never seems to air it.

First 10 Kamen Riders' Belts

29 April 2009

This article is brought to you by KazeTora.

When someone talks about kamen rider, probably there’s only a few that pops up in your head for example, Kamen Rider Black and Black RX, Kamen Rider Kuuga, Kamen Rider Blade, etc. The reason is because there’re a lot of riders in the Kamen Rider series and non-Japan local tv probably only showed 3 or 4 of 'em.

One thing about all the Kamen Rider is their source of power, even in Kamen Rider 555/Faiz, all of the guys have pointed out the belt as something which gives power and even in the Decade series, Kamen Rider Diend also hunts for the power belts (in his case, Emperor/Omega’s Belt). So, let’s talk about belts then… Since I figure that this have an opportunity to be a long discussion, let’s limit them, shall we?

Showa Rider
Kamen Rider Ichigo/1
Power base: Wind

The first rider belt in the history of Kamen Rider is actually wind powered. Imagine that. So actually, the first rider is kinda environmentally friendly, huh? His belt is activated using a strong current of wind, and to achieve that he either has to henshin on top of his bike (speeding very fast) or falling off a cliff (also speeding very fast, naturally…). Yeah, being a rider is one serious job to handle. Now after Ichigo get a proper upgrade, he then finally able to henshin without having to fall from a dangerous height or riding bike. His belt kinda got inspired by Niigo’s belt on that one. Since the belt’s power coming from wind, they simply call it Typhoon Belt.

Trivia: Kamen Rider Ichigo initially didn’t have any henshin pose and that makes Kamen Rider Niigo, the first rider to have a henshin pose. Confused? Drink some milk, and then get back here.

Kamen Rider Niigo/2
Power base: Wind

Not much to say here, since this belt is actually a second belt created by Shocker to fight on par with Ichigo. But those stupid scientists at Shocker HQ did a second mistake. They again forgot to alter the brain before altering the body. Or probably there was a requirement for the body to be altered before the brain? Anyway... this mistake ended up causing Niigo to convert himself to become Justice’s ally. The belt is exactly the same like Ichigo, only they now have a manual guide so Ichimonji Hayato now knows how to strike a good looking pose for henshin.

Trivia: When Niigo was defeated by Dead… euh… something, he decided to strengthen his body and go to the Amazon Jungle to get himself bitten by various poisonous animal. I’d go to Shaolin Temple and learn some kung fu instead, but hey, every man is to himself, rite?

Kamen Rider V3
Power base: Two scoop of wind

Yep, the third rider now got a double dose of those windy thingy. So the belt is simply called Double Typhoon Belt. This is a very unique belt because it can absorb energy from the surrounding to be unleashed as a rider punch or rider kick causing a fatal damage. Or, if let’s say Shiro Kazami is surrounded left, right, and all around, he can actually unleashed Double Reverse Typhoon, and cause a more devastating damage to the surroundings. The catch? Well, our dude here can’t transform for a good solid 3 hours. But hey, if the enemy can wait for you to henshin, then can definitely wait for 3 hrs to attack, rite?

Trivia: Shiro Kazami actually requested Ichigo and Niigo to change him into a grasshopper looking dude. So in a way, he’s actually willing to become a cyborg. Lucky for him, after he’s completed, they didn’t give him an Austrian accent like what the people in 2029AD did to The Governator… I mean Terminator.

Kamen Rider… err… Riderman
Power base: none

You wonder why? Well, simply because our dude here doesn’t have a henshin belt. Heck, he didn’t even have a mouth cover. His belt is just some nifty looking belt that some Japanese dude managed to mash up to create an illusionary belt he even probably got it in Shibuya or some sort. So he doesn’t have a belt, stores his costumes in his motorcycle, and everytime there’s evil in the corner, all he needs to do is put on his helmet and then break the world record for Fastest Clothes Change In front Of a Monster. So Mr. Yuki Joji, you might want to register yourself for the Guiness.

Trivia: Yuki Joji was working for Destron previously; he lost his arm due to some evil dude frame him of treason. During his execution, he managed to be saved but lost one arm in the process due to acid. His left hand? Saved in the process of rescuing because he needs to cover his mouth and nose to protect his uber handsome face… Guy doesn’t have a mouth cover, give him a break, mmm kay?

Kamen Rider X
Power base: unclear, possibly electric due to robotic nature

This is one rider with the most powerful…hair, I mean cyborg construct. Unlike the other, Keisuke Jin is not a cyborg but he’s something more powerful… more menacing… they called it… Kaizorg. Now, while I dunno what the frog is a kaizorg, let’s just assume that it’s uber bad-a*s. His belt now is not his power base; his belt is just there to do a very important role. To keep pants from falling while doing all those running, jumping, and all that jazz. I’m kidding. His belt can actually store X’s main weapon which is a rod that can transform into a longer rod, sword, belt, usb thumb drive, iPod… wait… *cough* all sorts of useful stuffs to fight with. This will be followed by a lot more in the future… (Hint: RX)

Trivia: X didn’t really shout Henshin, his shouting statement is actually Set Up, then followed by Dai Henshin. And that thing he’s holding? Nope, that’s not an Olympus pocket digital camera to store his cute photo on Facebook, that stuff is called Redizer and Perfecter. (And not henshinizer like what I used to think) The other one is for his mask, and the other is for his mouth piece/mouth freshener.

Kamen Rider Amazon
Power base: Magic

A-ma-zon! Yeah, that’s what he shout when he’s doing the henshin, of course by that he won’t use the word henshin anymore. Amazon’s belt is pretty unique on its own. First of all, it’s always there, rider form or human form, and secondly, the belt actually does nothing. It’s not really a transform device. The focus of Amazon is more on the arm bracelet he always wears, which is called Gigi. In my knowledge, the bracelet later on will be used together by Amazon with its twin, Gaga. When combined Gigi and Gaga can unleash Amazon’s most powerful attack, Super Daisetsudan. Of course following the trend of armlet naming, the most famous Amazon quote is… “Gau.”

Trivia: Unlike other rider, Amazon is the first rider not based on any insect. His design is based on a chameleon. His color is green and red basically to give signal that he obey traffic rules and also to hide blood, his or the enemy’s. He’s probably the only rider that runaway when he first saw his bike as well… I don’t even remember the wuss Ryoutaro of Den-O run away from a bike but hey, give the kid a break, Daisuke Yamamoto is raised in the jungle, okay? You either be a kamen rider or blonde underwear model swinging from tree to tree covered only with loin cloth, meh.

Kamen Rider Stronger
Power base: Electric

Shigeru Jou is a smart man, he wants revenge, but he knows that he probably won’t survive even against those puny henchmen that always make noises like “Jii, jii, jii”. So, he does research and gamble that those evil scientists will do a frogged up job again and transform his body to kamen rider without altering his mind to become evil. Voila!! The dude is correct. He’s given a cyborg body; a henshin belt called Electora which draws power based on… fire, kidding, on electric, and later on, he will have a female sidekick called Tackle which focus on the T… try to do an image research on Denpa Ningen Tackle, you’ll know what I mean. ;) The only downside is, he’s stuck with a giant S in the middle of his shirt and even his transformed state. I think now Ichigo will be very thankful that he didn’t have a giant 1 on his shirt.

Trivia: He will be referred later on in the future by Kamen Rider Kabuto which uses the same insect as his “main animal” form, the kabuto bettle/rhino bettle. Oh, one more thing, the guy that portrays Shigeru Jou is Shigeru Araki. No, that has nothing to do with that giant S in the shirt. Wait… no, positive.

Kamen Rider Skyrider
Power base: Wind

First of all, let’s clear up one thing which has been pointed out in the series and in the manga. This dude did not fly. His belt have that suspicious switch thingy that can actually alter gravity, so technically speaking, our great hero is gliding, he’s not flying, he’s just falling with style. (Says Woody to Buzz Lightyear as well) Now where was I? Oh yeah, the belt. His belt is called Tornado. Hiroshi Tsukuba got tangled in this mess because he witnesses some abduction of a scientist by the Neo Shocker. Neo Shocker had enough of their evil in-source scientists, so they decided to do outsourcing for their strongest warrior projects. Apparently Dr. Shiba Keitarou, yeah, the outsource scientists trick them by doing his own projects, creating a powerful warrior, but to fight Neo Shocker as Skyrider. Yeah, that’s what you normally get from outsource, empty promises, weird execution, zero documentation, and the end product normally gives problem. Oh, and their service pack doesn’t help as well, since Skyrider is
getting stronger but still doesn’t side with Neo Shocker.

Trivia: He is known internationally as New Kamen Rider probably because this series started after a long 4 years hiatus by the guys that give us this wonderful show. So for 19 episodes, he is known as Kamen Rider. Only after episode 20, Stronger which now looks Smarter as well, pointed out that his name is Skyrider, probably because he’s a rider and he’s in the sky. Way to go, Smarter! I mean Stronger! Btw, he realized to modify his henshin line later on by modifying it to Sky Henshin. So much for creativity…

Kamen Rider Super-1
Power base: Electric

Have you ever wanted to be an astronaut? Go to the moon? Establish a base of evil operation then terrorize the humans on earth, mwahahaahahahaha… Huh? Me? Oh no, I always wanted to be a musician, but that’s just me. Now, Kazuya Oki also wanted to be one of ‘em astronauts. So he went to a lab which I assume to be kinda secret (only known by the government and the evil organization so that they can attack it later on) to be transformed into the first super astronaut called simply Super-1. Now he should’ve been very suspicious on a lot of things, first of all, they already have Steve Austin as the Six Million Dollar Man, the budget on some Japanese wanted to go to the moon will most likely be lower. And secondly, no one speak English in an American top secret lab for NASA??? But anyway, after operating and all the chaos, Super-1 survived the attack and decided to return to Japan. With him he got his henshin belt called Psycrod, with that belt he can summon his 5 arms.

Trivia: His default arms are the Silver Hands/Super Hands (ability: Super Punch). The others, blue Electric Hands (to shoot an electric beam, kinda useful nowadays probably...), red Power Hands (to lift heavy objects if the pay is right), gold Radar Hands (to shoot missiles that can detect stuffs, like where is the nearest McDonalds), and green Katy Perry/Hot Cold Hands (right cold, left hot, mix ‘em up, you’ll get a melted ice cream and a frozen BBQ bacon). Oh yeah, since he’s created in the US and A, his bike is a Harley, and he sings country songs… I made up the last part. The song, not the bike, okay?

Kamen Rider ZX
Power base: unknown alien technology… wait, is that considered electric? Or recycled cabbage?

Kamen Raida Zee Cross. Not ZX. Ryo Murasame is the only person in the world that can testify in the UFO convention that he was kidnapped by an alien and survived. And also the alien did not mate with him, they just simply play around and transform him into a turtle bug based being called Kamen Rider ZX. Oh and did I say that he was brainwashed? Now there’s actually nothing special about his belt, because it’s just a simple buckle. So, my final rider’s belt for this part is actually not fun at all. Lemme just get straight to trivia then.

Trivia: if you want to revisit most of your fave rider, you can watch this show, because all of the previous riders are shown in the handy videotape created by V3. Never knew he was such a great Kamen Rider fan being a Kamen Rider himself. And since we have V3, we know that he likes to count judging from Riderman’s case (labeling him as the fourth), so ZX also got the same treatment and labeled as the tenth rider by V3. After this all the future riders doesn’t really go near V3, but I am sure, somewhere out there, he’s still watching for the new riders, and still counting… *looking at the sunset*

So, that’s my first part of the showa era riders. My hands are a bit tired, so I’ll just pass the control back to Leon. But before that, let’s see a striking handsome pose by the ten riders. All of ’em ready for combat except for Skyrider which is apparently busy looking at the camera. He’s just probably taking too much advice from Niigo about posing.

Ciao.

DragonBall Kai: Saiyan Invasion on NDS

28 April 2009

For Dragonball Tuesday this week comes a release of Dragonball Kai RPG tomorrow 29 April 2009 officially in Japan.

For DB fans who played the Nintendo version. What all the talking without a preview.

As you can see, it has the combination of the classic Dragonball RPG with much better graphic. If my assumption is correct, the whole game will start from young Gohan being kidnapped by Radditz and end at facing with Vegeta on earth.

In between are quests at different areas to raise your level. Don't expect to see Super Saiya in this series but be sure there will be another game following when the Z fighters facing off with Frieza. Who knows, maybe Androids and Cell will follow. So that is another good reason for getting a NDS... Hey! Do one for PSP please!

Go Go Kamen Rider Origin from me

27 April 2009

One lazy weekend afternoon in the early 1980s. I was fringing the television channel and something caught my eyes. That moment change my life forever...

As kid then, I knew Spider-man, Batman and Superman but who is this insect looking guy on the bike? The answer to the question doesn't matter anymore when the song has ended. I watched the movie unfolded in mandarin (Chinese language). I mistaken it as a Taiwan movie production as it was rare to see Japanese dubbed movie aired on local channel.

With the monsters, Kungfu actions, special visual effect, nice looking bikes, the high tech belt gadget and the AWESOME Henshin Transformation, I became an instant fan. The very next day in school, it seems I was not the special only one who caught the movie and became a fan. The whole class boys were talking about it and hoping to look for more information on it. We waited for another weekend to see if it air again during the same timing but it never happen again...

Sometime later, the stickers were found at my neighborhood provision shop. However retails did not have any toys on that. My excitement and passion for the rider needed to be express by some channel. At that age of 7, I do what I do best, Drawing. I drew Ichigo as much as I can remember and I remember every detail of his costume and his trustful bike, cyclone 1. That drawing actually won me a prize in a local community competition.

Sometime later, they was another movie shown on TV. This time they are 10 riders in one movie. I was like...OMG!! How cool was that!

Not long later, our neighboring country, Malaysia started airing Kamen Rider TV series. Although it was in Bahasa Malayu (Malay language), I faithfully watched the series every week. By then it was no longer ichigo but Mask Rider Black.

Only a decade or more were the video and toys finally hit our shores. Today there are still no Riders series shown on local channel and TV. And I wonder how Bandai actually get to sell their toys in that line here without children exposing to the TV series on local TV or cable.

So that is my first encounter of Mask Rider. What about you?

Kero-Pla Secret File Vol.1

25 April 2009

I bought some Bandai Model Kit sometime back (Not Gundam but Keroro Gunso) and I got this booklet for FREE.

At first I thought this booklet was just some Keroro Model kit catalog. Until I took notice the title and this logo.

Secret? What Secret? I was dying to take a look when suddenly...

It was Tamama foot soldier standing in the way...

Nothing some sweet talks and Food can't do. That should keep Tamama busy awhile. Quickly I read thru... So this is the secret!

It document some new combination of the robot figures which were never being publish! Unfortunately, I do not have some of the figures in these series to try it out. What follow next captured my attention.

These can't be real! New Stickers for the model kit! COOL!! These will further enhance the figure's emotion! Here's how to.

And here's the real deal. STICKERS!!

I personally find these NEAT. Look at the pass!

And the eyes emotions!

Total 2 full pages of stickers to stick on the figures! Isn't that great?

Ok Tamama... Thank goodness we are fast to see what was the secret anyway.
This booklet come free with some model kits I bought.
What are the model kits? That will be my secret to you later. Stay Tune!

No photography for display?

24 April 2009

You went to a toy shop and you saw the beautiful displays of the toys at their window outside their shop. You like the display and decided to take some photos of the figures composition outside their shop. The shop owner came out and point to a "No photography" sign at the side of the display. You asked why and they kept insisting no photography.

That make you wonder what is wrong with taking display toy photos outside their shop.

Why have such a nice toy collection outside their toy shop and not allow anyone to take photograph of it? Is there a privacy issue as it is outside the shop on the display window which was intended for public viewing? You are running a business and those products not your design. The same toy can be taken by anyone at anywhere too! I thought it should be an honor if someone take photos about the lovely display? It can increase exposure too! Some more the photos taken are not to use to sell toys either. So what the purpose of your display if you forbid photograph of it? It just doesn't seems to make sense right?

What do you think?

Anyway here are some nice looking toy display for your viewing pleasure after all the ranting. >D

Toy Hunter Shop in Hong Kong

23 April 2009

As promised, here is a entry of one of the Toy Shop I visited when I was in Hong Kong. This Toy Hunters is located at MongKok.

Specialized in selling 12 inch Hot Toys and sideshow figures. Some of it ready for Pre-order. Saw some on display.

Here is something that most of 12 inch toy collector had their eyes on... Terminator Salvation. Come with LED eyes.

One of this Terminator is taller than 12 inches... Really kick ass.

If you like cuter stuff, Cosbabies maybe for you. Cute looking batman figures. Hey! Why so serious? :P

They have Iron man for that too. While I find the Michael Jackson ones interesting. Can you spot all his MV costume?

Compare to some other shop around, the shop prices seems quite fair. Too bad I am not into 12 inch collection. The toys are normally over my budget and space. Well that is just me. :)

DragonBall MTR card Collectibles in Hong Kong

21 April 2009

For this week Dragonball Tuesday, allow me to share with you some unique stuff I discovered over at Hong Kong.

As my trips was free and easy, we took MTR most of the time. It really convenient in Hong kong. So as I was walking into the station and this dragonball poster caught my eye.

It was Goku and gangs in the early days of the Dragonball series.

To celebrate Dragonball 20 years of anniversary, the MTR came out this limited edition for Dragonball fans. Good marketing strategy! Beside the cards, 2 figures of child Goku and Master Roshi were included as well.

I jumped on this and head to the counter. Just before I hit the counter, I saw another same poster with a yellow tag on it...

Man was I disappointed. Just less than a week and they are Sold out! Dragonball are really hot in Hong Kong. I still can't get over it tho... Okay that's Dragonball Tuesday for us.

I wonder anyone who got this can share with us in details...

My Vintage Playmate Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Donatello

20 April 2009

Hitting 21 years old is one major milestone for a human being. It is the freedom as some will say. The coming of age. You get to make your own decisions and be held responsible and accountable for them as well.

Not too long ago, Playmate released the 25th Anniversary Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I was excited when I saw the retro packaging. Memories of my childhood looking at all the turtles in their packaging at local retail came back to me. However when I saw the price tag on the 25th Anniversary TMNT, it brought me back to reality. LOL

Anyway I remember how I held my first TMNT toy on my hand and made my way to the checkout counter. I paid for it from my savings and my budget had allowed me to get only one out of the four. I chose Donatello that day.

Although for the cartoon and toys it was 25 years but for me and my Donatello, it was 21 years.

My Donatello was not without flaws. The moment I took him out of the packaging, his head just popped out of his neck socket. I was devastated. My hard-earned saving! I know cursing at the Toy maker for the QC doesn't help, so I tried my best to restore it.

As his head was made of rubber, I tried using hot water to soften the rubber to fit the head back to his neck but with no success. Finally, I decided to cut a gap and fit the head in instead. It was a quick fix and a permanent one.

His head still popped out every now and then but I accepted that and played with it extra care.

The plastic material became somewhat sticky through the years. I gave him a soap bath occasionally to wash the stickiness off him. Today only 2 bo remained with him.

The 1988 trademark still visible on the back of his shell.

After all this years, Donatello is still look awesome to me.

I love this pose but I recall it was Michaelangelo who said that in the 1989 first TMNT Movie.

Anyway I'm pretty sure many of you had your TMNT toys and still remember how they taken the world by storm. I bet many of you have all four of them right?

If you are looking for TMNT Toys and stuff, you can get it here.
